Vignetting

Vignetting is the darkening or reduction in brightness that occurs at the periphery of an image compared to its center. This effect can be optical (caused by lens limitations), mechanical (resulting from accessories like filters or hoods blocking light), natural (due to light falloff at certain angles), or added intentionally in post-processing. While traditionally considered a technical flaw, vignetting is now often employed as a creative tool to direct viewer attention toward the center of the image, create a vintage aesthetic, add mood, or give portraits a dreamy quality. In portrait photography, subtle vignetting draws attention to the subject's face. In landscape photography, it can create a more contained, intimate feel. Digital editing software makes it easy to add, enhance, or remove vignetting effects, giving photographers complete control over this once-uncontrollable aspect of photography.
